Create a project for your work

Start in an authorized department or prepare an unpublished project first.

A project keeps the tasks, planning context, and supporting views for a workstream or delivery together. Choose the destination based on who owns the work.

Create directly in a department

You need Spaces access and authority to create projects in the destination. A Viewer cannot create projects. Having editing access to an existing project does not, by itself, authorize another project in that department.

  1. In Spaces, find the destination department in navigation.
  2. Use its New Project action when available.
  3. Give the project a recognizable name, such as Northstar onboarding.
  4. Complete the options in the creation dialog, including the work mode when offered. BAU describes ongoing work; Project describes a finite delivery.
  5. Create the project and open All Tasks. The standard flow also creates a Canvas view.
  6. Add the first tasks and review the project’s sharing before involving colleagues.

Creating inside a folder also needs the applicable Space write permission. If you are allowed to create in the department but not the folder, ask an administrator to check that additional requirement.

Start with a personal unpublished project

If you are preparing work before selecting its department, use New Project under My Spaces when it is available. The project remains unpublished until you use Publish to Space. It is still part of the selected company workspace; do not treat “personal” as a promise that company administrators cannot access it.

Prepare a short purpose, initial tasks, and supporting context. When the work is ready, use the publication guide to move it into an authorized department.

Add enough context for a colleague to begin

For a customer onboarding project, the first tasks might be “Confirm the kickoff participants,” “Collect the implementation brief,” and “Agree the first delivery date.” Record the responsible person and a meaningful date where appropriate. Put background material in project Notes or Files instead of repeating it in every task.

Use Project Settings to describe the work and adjust its work mode. The mode label does not set permissions, enforce a process, or change task metrics.

Confirm the result

Open All Tasks and Canvas, then reopen the project from navigation. Confirm its name and location. Ask a colleague with the intended access to open it. If a creation action is missing or rejected, ask the administrator to check project-creation governance; repeated creation attempts may leave you unsure which project to use.
